My work, so far

From the Army to healthcare software: my background, the systems I’ve worked on, and the experience behind this notebook.

About meExperience

I’m David Harris, a full-stack developer and Army veteran. Most of my professional software experience has been in healthcare, with .NET and React at the center of the work.

I’ve worked in professional web development for over nine years. My software development experience started earlier, during the last part of my Army career, when I built tools to automate manual processes.

This is the background behind the rest of my notebook. It’s a note I’ll keep updating as the work changes.

Where I am now

I’m a Senior .NET Developer at a healthcare organization, currently serving in a tech lead position.

My work includes application modernization and improving the usability of healthcare software.

Building across the stack

Earlier in my career, I worked at Quadax, where I progressed from Systems Developer I into lead development roles.

Across my healthcare software roles, I’ve worked on user interfaces, APIs, backend services, and maintaining and modernizing existing applications. I’ve also contributed to testing and performance improvements.

My responsibilities have included technical leadership, collaboration across engineering and product teams, and mentoring developers in a remote environment.

Making software easier to work with

Part of my experience involves simplifying complex document workflows through clearer user interfaces. I’ve also built developer tooling to support everyday engineering work.

Outside healthcare, my projects have included small-business workflow tools and AI-powered utilities. These have given me opportunities to work on a different scale and explore ideas outside my professional roles.

Running a small development business

From 2017 to 2024, I founded and operated The Website Foundry, serving small businesses with web development work.

That gave me experience working directly with business owners alongside my work on larger engineering teams.

Before software was my full-time job

I served in the U.S. Army from 2008 to 2017, working as a mechanic, maintenance manager, senior instructor, and training development specialist.

My responsibilities included leading teams, managing transportation equipment, delivering technical instruction, and developing standard operating procedures. In training development, I also built software tools to automate manual processes.

In 2017, I completed the Microsoft Software and Systems Academy’s Cloud Application Development program.

What I work with

  • Frontend: React, TypeScript, JavaScript, Zustand, Redux, HTML, CSS, and accessibility.
  • Backend: C#, ASP.NET Core, REST APIs, GraphQL, background services, Kafka, and Camunda.
  • Data: SQL Server and T-SQL.
  • Delivery and testing: Azure, GitHub Actions, Azure Pipelines, Git, Jest, React Testing Library, and Vitest.

That’s a snapshot of tools I’ve used, rather than a requirement that every project use the same stack.

What this notebook adds

A résumé can list the roles and technologies. Here, I want to make room for the decisions, lessons, and questions behind the work.

I use AI daily, and I share takeaways from my working life on TikTok. Future notes will give those conversations more room, alongside the technical and personal things I’m figuring out.
